Black Sabbath have reached a milestone by joining Spotify‘s Billions Club, with their 1970 hit “Paranoid” crossing 1 billion streams.
The legendary heavy metal band’s iconic single is the latest entry to the 581-track Spotify Billions Club.
Black Sabbath broke the big news on Instagram, writing, “Paranoid has joined the Billion Plays Club on Spotify. Crank it up now!”
Co-founder and bassist Geezer Butler commented, “Thanks to everyone who made the song Paranoid a member of Spotify’s billion club, with over one billion streams.”
The title song of the band’s second studio album, “Paranoid” is widely regarded as one of the greatest heavy metal songs of all time. It reached No. 4 on the U.K. Singles Chart and No. 61 on the Billboard Hot 100.
“Paranoid” was the first Black Sabbath single release, coming six months after their self-titled debut was released.
Butler told Guitar World magazine in 2004, “A lot of the Paranoid album was written around the time of our first album, Black Sabbath. We recorded the whole thing in about 2 or 3 days, live in the studio.”
“The song ‘Paranoid’ was written as an afterthought,” he added. “We basically needed a 3 minute filler for the album, and Tony came up with the riff. I quickly did the lyrics, and Ozzy was reading them as he was singing.”
